Biography
Cristina Clara is a Portuguese singer and songwriter from Minho, based in Lisbon, whose work brings together traditional oral music and contemporary languages, in a dialogue inspired above all by the rhythms and poetry of Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde.
She made her recording debut with Lua Adversa (2021) and presents ENTRETELA in 2026, both distinguished as Antena 1 Disco. An invited songwriter for Festival da Canção RTP 2024, she reached the final with "Primavera", with lyrics by her and music by Jon Luz. She was selected for an official showcase at WOMEX 2024 in Manchester and nominated for the UPBEAT Best New Talent Award 2025. She has performed on major stages in Portugal and abroad, and her new album brings together collaborations with artists such as António Zambujo, Sérgio Godinho, Amélia Muge and Tito Paris.
Her concert was one of the highlights of WOMEX in Manchester in October 2024.

She trained in nursing in Porto and moved to Lisbon in 2005. In Lisbon, while for several years combining hospital work with music, she deepened her training in singing, voice and theatre performance at the Evoé space. Taking part in a theatre project, in the role of a young fado singer, led to an invitation from Marco Rodrigues to sing at the historic Café Luso, which marked the start of her professional career in music.
Her contact with musicians from different parts of the world, particularly Portugal, Cape Verde and Brazil, was decisive in shaping her artistic language. Starting from fado and traditional Portuguese song, she explored rhythmic, melodic and poetic affinities between morna, choro, batuque and other oral-tradition repertoires. Throughout this path, the word takes a central place, both in her own songwriting and in her choice and re-creation of repertoire.
In 2021 she released her debut album, Lua Adversa, co-produced by Cristina Clara, Pedro Loch and Edu Miranda, with support from the Museu do Fado and distribution by Sony Music. The album, recognised by Antena 1, proposes an encounter between fado and Brazilian choro, bringing together musicians from different traditions and artistic paths.
Since then, she has performed at festivals and venues such as NOS Alive, Santa Casa Alfama, Festival MED, Jardins do Marquês, Centro Cultural de Belém, Teatro da Trindade and Festival Internacional dos Açores. Internationally, highlights include Atlantic Music Expo in Cape Verde, Casa de Portugal in São Paulo, the Centre des Arts Pluriels in Luxembourg, the Antwerp Spring Festival in Belgium and the Festival Glatt & Verkehrt in Austria, as well as performances in other European countries and in North Africa.
In 2024, she was one of the invited songwriters for the RTP Festival da Canção, reaching the final with "Primavera", a composition written in partnership with Cape Verdean musician Jon Luz. That same year, she was selected for the official showcase programme at WOMEX in Manchester, one of the most important international platforms dedicated to world music. In 2025, she was one of the artists nominated for the UPBEAT Best New Talent Award, a European distinction dedicated to new talent in music.
In 2026, she presents ENTRETELA, her second album, under her own artistic direction. Bringing together songs, texts and different musical worlds, the album deepens the relationship between tradition and contemporary creation, evoking borders as seams, margins that come together. It features António Zambujo, Sérgio Godinho, Tito Paris and Amélia Muge, among others, and words by writers such as Maria do Rosário Pedreira, Ana Sofia Paiva, Edu Mundo and Rolando Semedo. The diversity of repertoires, authors and voices finds unity in an idea of encounter: between people, places, memories and forms of expression.
She is also one of the founders of Roda de Percussão Ibérica, a multicultural collective of voices and traditional percussion based in Lisbon. Alongside her concerts, she runs workshops and gatherings dedicated to traditional song and hand percussion, with particular interest in oral transmission practices and in the role of women in preserving and reinventing this heritage.
Between performance, writing and the creation of collective projects, Cristina Clara seeks to make music a place of dialogue, where traditions are not understood as closed territories, but as living matter, open to new encounters and possibilities.

Cristina’s music is a fabulously rich mingling of traditional Portuguese fados and chorinhos with Brazilian choro and Cape Verdean morna, her singing at times alluringly jazzy.
